A walk by the Avon River
A unique part of the city, the Avon River sustains a diverse plant and animal life and is a source of many recreational activities.
A very pleasant atmosphere close to the city that lets the mind escape the traffic noise for a while. Many of the bridges are filled with character, and the tree-lined paths make for an enjoyable walk. It’s also a great spot to watch the gondoliers taking passengers up and down the river.
Punting on the Avon
If you’re the doing kind and not the watching kind, take a tour of the river yourself! Leaving from the Antigua Boatsheds, it doesn’t get more romantic than this.
Admire the beautiful Christchurch Botanic Gardens or the changing face of the city centre as you are expertly guided gently along the Avon River on an authentic Edwardian punting tour.
A great day trip, you can either drive to Akaroa or take a daily return Akaroa Shuttle. Just 75 km from Christchurch City, Akaroa – aka ‘Little France’ – is a historic French and British settlement in the heart of an ancient volcano on Banks Peninsula.
Akaroa offers plenty of scenic adventures, including dolphin and penguin experiences, a visit the Giant’s House, or a serene stroll on the harbourside.
Riccarton House & Bush
Riccarton House & Bush is a unique New Zealand heritage site consisting of two historic buildings, flanked by beautiful open parkland and ornate gardens, bordered by the River Avon and set against extensive native bush forest featuring Kahikatea trees up to 600 years old.
This tranquil 12-hectare reserve is located just 3.5 km from Christchurch city centre. The protected bush area has free entry and the house has a wonderful cafe. Heritage Tours run six days per week.
Hiking at Godley Head
There are many great hiking trails in Christchurch, but none are quite as spectacular as the one you’ll find at Godley Head. It once served as a coastal defence during WW2, which will certainly be of interest to any history buffs.
This trail starts at Taylors Mistake Beach, which is an excellent attraction in itself.
